Characterization

I've barely finished one chapter of The Tale of Two Kings, and I'm already on the verge of introducing the main conflict of this particular story. I need to create something to add, not filler so much as additional character-building.

As of right now, I've introduced five characters that I plan to use to drive some amount of the story in future chapters, three of which will continue into the long-term story. I'm not sure I've given enough time for readers to become accustomed to these characters and their personalities, and I don't really want to dive right into the action quite so soon.

Any suggestions on how I might delve a little more deeply into character personalities?

NOTE: The links in the forum need to be updated. If anybody is interested in what I've got so far in this story, leave a comment here and I'll give you access and a link.

First of all, it might help to decide which characters you want to show to the readers a bit more in depth, and what characteristics you want to show, and what related information you might want to come out. This is likely to be a big help in deciding what sort of scenes to put in. For example, the whole money discussion scene between Noldar and Margareta in TCOS came about because I wanted to establish that there HAD been a dowry, and wanted to show the differences in their expectations of its use. Particularly, it was an opportunity to show that Noldar had NO inclination to leave his wife totally financially dependent on him (in complete contrast to her father).

AS for the link, if you give me the link, I can update the forum links. If they're out of date, it was because I wasn't entirely aware that they had changed.

Well, I definitely need to show that Jabal is charitable and does not stand for injustice. Maybe I'll have to throw in a minor conflict involving one of the soldiers. Actually, now that I think about it, it would help me emphasize Luther's indecisiveness between justice and duty and Abel's harshness, as well as give a little more time to build up Commander Davis and Lieutenant Stewart.
